Senator Emmanuel C. Nwachukwu, representing Anambra South Senatorial District of Anambra State in Nigeria’s 10th Senate, said he discharged his legislative duties on Wednesday by raising critical national issues during the Senate plenary, with particular focus on the power sector, foreign policy, and the welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora.
The lawmaker’s comments came during the screening of ministerial nominees Engr. Joseph Tegbe and Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye, who appeared before the Senate for confirmation.
In his engagement with Tegbe, Nwachukwu highlighted Nigeria’s persistent power outages and asked for concrete strategies to address challenges across generation, transmission, and distribution. He stressed the need to remove systemic bottlenecks and bureaucratic inefficiencies that continue to hinder the sector.
The senator noted that stable electricity is vital for economic growth, industrial development, and productivity, especially in Anambra South, where businesses and households remain affected by unreliable supply.
With Enikanolaiye, Nwachukwu turned attention to Nigeria’s foreign missions and the growing concerns over xenophobic attacks on citizens abroad. He sought clarity on plans to ensure diplomatic missions are adequately funded, functional, and capable of protecting Nigerians overseas.
He also emphasized the need to address operational challenges facing several missions in meeting basic obligations while safeguarding the interests of Nigerians in the diaspora, including those from Anambra South.
After the nominees responded to lawmakers’ questions, Nwachukwu joined his colleagues in confirming their appointments and wished them success as they assume their new roles in national service.
