The Chief Executive Officer of Maryland Hotel, Idu, Chief Peter Nnaji, says his decision to convene a meeting of Ndigbo in the community is driven by the need to restore unity, peace, and love among the Igbo population in the Federal Capital Territory’s industrial area.
Speaking to journalists recently in his office in Abuja, the Afunwa Elotenna of Ndiagu, Obuno, Akpugo Nkanu, Enugu State, explained that Ndigbo are known for unity, peace, love and progress, values he said must be revived in Idu.
The meeting, slated for next Sunday at Maryland Hotel, Idu, was announced in churches and other public places. Nnaji expressed concern that Ndigbo in the area had not held union meetings for a long time, describing the situation as unacceptable for one of Nigeria’s major ethnic groups.
He said consultations with members revealed a strong desire to reactivate the association and rebuild solidarity among Igbo residents. According to him, arrangements are already in place to ensure a smooth reunion, adding that unity is critical for Ndigbo to speak with one voice on issues affecting their welfare in the FCT.
Chairlady of the women’s wing and proprietor of Nobis Clinic, Idu, Mrs. Veronica Ugochukwu, commended Nnaji for his effort to rekindle the men’s wing of the association. She called for understanding and cooperation during the meeting and prayed for divine guidance before, during, and after the gathering.
The paramount ruler of Ndigbo in Idu, HRH Engr. Jude Igwe, also praised the initiative. He underscored the importance of peace, love, and unity, urging members to put God first in all their dealings to strengthen cohesion and progress in the community.
The gathering is expected to draw Igbo residents from across Idu as they take steps to rebuild trust and reestablish a functional union for the community’s collective interest.
