The Nkwuegu Plaza Tenants Association held its 2026 General Meeting and Election on Thursday, 21st May 2026, at the premises of Nkwuegu Plaza, Area 3 Junction, Garki, Abuja.
The meeting began at about 2:45 PM with 38 members of the plaza community in attendance. Mallam Umar of Umag Cloud Ltd. offered the opening prayer.
In his opening address, outgoing Chairman Mr. Taiwo Charles Adebayo informed members that the tenure of his executive cabinet had officially expired. He declared his willingness to seek re-election through an open ballot process.
During his speech, a member of the outgoing executive, Mr. Kelechi Nwaike, objected to the chairman’s intention to contest again. He argued that past administrations had exited office without seeking another term, leading to a brief rowdy session among members.
Calm was restored after the chairman intervened and constituted an Interim Electoral Committee to oversee the election. Mr. Gerrard was appointed Interim Chairman, with Miss Maryjane as Interim Secretary.
Upon assuming duty, the Interim Chairman advised members to refer to the association’s constitution for clarity on eligibility for re-election. Attention was drawn to Article 8(2) of the Nkwuegu Plaza Tenants’ Association Constitution.
Copies of the constitution were circulated, and the relevant section was read aloud by the outgoing General Secretary. The article states that a member who completes a tenure may be re-elected for a second term, serving a maximum of four years unless they die, resign, or are removed for specified reasons.
Following the clarification, the meeting proceeded peacefully to the election of new executives to serve for the next two years. A motion to dissolve the outgoing executive council was moved by Comrade Ayodele Olusegun Ariyo and seconded by Mr. Alex Bannabas.
For the position of chairman, Mr. Alex Bannabas nominated Mr. Adebayo Taiwo Charles, while Mr. Kelechi Nwaike nominated Mr. Samson Okeke. After voting, Adebayo polled 25 votes against 12 for Okeke and was declared re-elected for a second term.
In the race for General Secretary, Mr. Samson Okeke nominated Comrade Ayodele Olusegun Ariyo. Ariyo secured 25 votes and was duly elected as the new General Secretary.
For Treasurer/Financial Secretary, Mr. Adebayo Taiwo Charles nominated Mr. Olavi Victor, who was elected unopposed. Mr. Patrick Agbo was nominated and elected as the new PRO/Provost, while Miss Maryjane was elected Welfare Officer.
Members described the election as free, fair, transparent, and credible. Several commended the maturity displayed during the process and offered advice aimed at strengthening unity and progress within the association.
The Interim Chairman and Interim Secretary congratulated members for their patience and democratic conduct. They urged the newly elected executives to remain committed, transparent, and proactive in discharging their duties.
In his acceptance speech, the re-elected Chairman, Mr. Adebayo Taiwo Charles, thanked tenants for the confidence reposed in him. He pledged to work for the betterment, unity, and welfare of all members.
The meeting ended on a joyful note with refreshments served as members interacted freely in celebration of the successful electoral process. The report was signed by Comrade Ayodele Olusegun Ariyo, General Secretary of the Nkwuegu Plaza Tenants’ Association.
