Abuja

The Anambra State Police Command has commenced a security-driven enforcement exercise that has led to the impounding of vehicles with tinted glasses, unregistered vehicles, and vehicles with concealed, covered, or defaced number plates across the state.

Clarifying the operation, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said in a press statement released to journalists on Sunday that the action is not arbitrary but targeted at specific violations being exploited by criminals.

According to Ikenga, officers are impounding vehicles with tinted glasses “with or without tinted glass permits,” alongside unregistered vehicles and those with number plates that are concealed, covered, or defaced.

He explained that the core objective is to “verify the authenticity of tinted glass permits, identify forged or fraudulently obtained permits, ensure due process, and enforce compliance with vehicle registration and number plate regulations.”

The PPRO noted that the exercise is also designed to prevent criminal elements from using such vehicles to evade identification. “Criminals increasingly use tinted vehicles to conceal their identities and frustrate law enforcement efforts,” the statement read.

While acknowledging public complaints, Ikenga said the Command “regrets the inconvenience this may cause to law-abiding residents,” but insisted the operation has become necessary due to prevailing security concerns in Anambra.

The police spokesman appealed to “Ndi Anambra and residents alike” for patience, understanding and cooperation as officers carry out the checks. He urged motorists to ensure their documents and vehicle markings are in order to avoid impoundment.

Reassuring residents, Ikenga said the exercise is being conducted “in the interest of safeguarding lives, protecting property and enhancing public safety across the State,” and will continue for as long as the security threats persist.
