There is growing tension within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), the All Progressives Congress (APC), the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other political parties, in the FCT following reports of a mass movement of members and executives to the Accord Party.
According to MediaWatch, the development came shortly after the Accord Party announced its FCT ticket for the 2027 general election.
The party named Dalhatu Ezekiel as its candidate for the Senate seat and Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika for the House of Representatives.
FCT indigenous youth groups have praised the selection of Dalhatu Ezekiel. They described him as a candidate well-liked among the indigenous people of the FCT.
At the same time, Igbo stakeholders in the FCT expressed support for Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika. Our source described Obika as a sitting member in the FCT with strong grassroots support.
Stakeholders who spoke with MediaWatch described the pairing of Ezekiel and Obika as a “strong match” ahead of the 2027 polls.
Some stakeholders noted that the dynamics in the FCT have shifted. “2027 election will be won by popular vote, not by wave in FCT,” one stakeholder said, pointing to the influence of grassroots mobilization over party popularity.
The defections have sparked anxiety in the NDC, APC and ADC camps in the FCT. Party leaders are reportedly holding emergency meetings to stem further losses ahead of the election.
