The race for the 2027 Arochukwu/Ohafia Federal Constituency seat has taken a colourful turn as National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ifeanyi Ogbonna, formally commenced his campaign with a massive homecoming rally over the weekend that drew thousands of supporters across Arochukwu.

Ogbonna arrived in Abia in a long convoy of vehicles and was escorted by enthusiastic supporters to his hometown, where he received a carnival-like welcome.

Women, youths and men drawn from both Federal constituencies trooped out in their thousands, while traditional dance troupes entertained the crowd. At the height of the reception, women laid their wrappers on the ground as a symbolic red carpet for the candidate, amid chants of “Ignes is the only man we know!”

The campaign launch comes on the heels of the commencement of campaigns for the 2027 Presidential and National Assembly elections in line with the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Addressing party leaders at his Arochukwu country Home, supporters and constituents, Ogbonna expressed appreciation to the NDC national and state leadership, as well as party executives and stakeholders across Arochukwu and Ohafia, for entrusting him with the party’s ticket.

He described the mandate as a collective call to responsible, accountable and effective representation.

“I am deeply humbled by the overwhelming reception yesterday, particularly from the people of Arochukwu LGA and Ward 3. Your massive turnout, love and support have strengthened my determination to serve our people,” he said.

Ogbonna promised a fundamental shift in the approach to constituency empowerment if elected in 2027, declaring that the people must move beyond short-term interventions to sustainable economic opportunities.

He specifically criticised what he described as the traditional cycle of “Keke empowerment, Okada empowerment, television empowerment, rice sharing and bucket empowerment,” arguing that constituents deserve programmes capable of creating lasting prosperity.

According to him, his administration would prioritise community-based production, skills acquisition, technology, education, entrepreneurship, agriculture and support for small businesses.

“We shall move from consumption to production,” Ogbonna declared, stressing that the ultimate objective would be to empower constituents to produce, earn, employ others and build sustainable livelihoods.

“Our people deserve more than temporary relief. They deserve opportunities, development, dignity and results,” he added.

Ogbonna is expected to face a keen contest in 2027 against the incumbent member of the constituency, Hon. Ibe Okwara, of the Labour Party, and Chief Ikenna Nicholas Ukwa, the APC candidate, among other contenders.

With the campaign now officially underway, the battle for who will represent Arochukwu/Ohafia in the House of Representatives promises to be one of the closely watched political contests in Abia ahead of the 2027 general elections.
