The Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency of the Federal Capital Territory, Abba Hassan Grema, has pledged to make the interests and needs of constituents the centrepiece of his legislative representation if elected.
Grema made the commitment in Abuja while responding to journalists after speaking at the inauguration of the women’s wing of the Anambra State Towns People Association (ASTPA).
He said effective parliamentary representation required constant interaction with the people, arguing that elected representatives must understand the challenges confronting their constituents before formulating or pursuing policies on their behalf.
“Representation is all about representing the general people at the parliament, and what they deserve is quality, effective representation,” Grema said.
He added: “That is what we are going to offer. It’s not going to be business as usual.”
According to him, his proposed approach would involve regular consultations with residents of both AMAC and Bwari, with a view to identifying the issues that require urgent attention.
“It’s an engagement process. We have to engage the people of AMAC/Bwari to know what they need most,” he said.
The NDC candidate said the prevailing economic hardship in the country made human development and the welfare of ordinary citizens important areas of concern.
He said he would seek to align his representation with policies capable of addressing the challenges facing Nigerians, while ensuring that the specific concerns of AMAC/Bwari residents received legislative attention.
Grema’s position suggests a constituency-based approach in which consultation with residents would form the basis of his legislative priorities.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, candidates seeking elective positions are expected to articulate specific programmes and demonstrate how their proposed representation would address the needs of their respective constituencies.
