The Federal Government has intensified moves to strengthen Nigeria’s border security architecture as the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) partners with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the European Union (EU).
The three-day Top Management Workshop on the review of the National Border Management Strategy (NBMS) 2019–2023 ended at Zuma Rock Resort, Niger State on September 30th.
In a statement on October 1, 2026 by its spokesman, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, the NIS said the workshop was aimed at aligning priorities for the next policy cycle, 2027–2031.
Comptroller-General of Immigration, KN Nandap, said Nigeria must lead Africa in integrated border management, stressing that the new strategy must be data-driven and capable of tackling emerging security challenges.
“The next strategy must be anchored on credible migration data, effective implementation mechanisms and sustained inter-agency collaboration,” Nandap said.
She added that the review must provide a clear and actionable framework to respond to emerging border management and security challenges.
The workshop included technical sessions, group presentations and an Executive Management Endorsement Session where key recommendations were validated and financing options considered.
The NIS said the engagement demonstrates its commitment with international partners to continuous improvement in border governance.
