Abuja

The Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in Nyanya and Karu, Abuja the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr Alex Edim, has come out in defense of the NBA President, Mazi Afam Osigwe (SAN), alleging that some lawyers are engaging in blackmail and verbal attacks against him. Edim made the remarks during a press conference in his office in Abuja, where he condemned the alleged actions of some lawyers, including Dr Tonye Clinton Jaja, a Senior Counsel of Nigeria (SCN).

Edim stated that no amount of blackmail or hired scripting can demean the hard-earned reputation of Osigwe, describing him as a role model to the Association. He alleged that Jaja and others have consistently attacked Osigwe’s person and integrity, and called on them to stop the verbal attacks.

The NBA Chair emphasized that the Association is bigger than any individual, and that the focus should be on issue-based campaigns and preparing for the upcoming elections, rather than engaging in distractions that could bring the noble profession to disrepute. He urged lawyers to be careful not to step on toes in the course of supporting a particular candidate.

Edim also questioned Jaja’s motives, pointing out that as a Senior Counsel of Nigeria, he is no longer a member of the NBA and should allow the Association to breathe. He emphasized that all aspirants are valued and that whoever emerges as the winner will be supported by all for a progressive Bar.

The controversy surrounding Osigwe’s presidency has been ongoing, with some lawyers criticizing his leadership style and calling for his resignation. However, Edim’s remarks suggest that there is still strong support for Osigwe within the Association.

The NBA has been known for its influential role in shaping Nigeria’s legal landscape, and the upcoming elections are expected to be keenly contested. As the Association prepares for this crucial period, Edim’s defense of Osigwe is likely to be seen as a significant show of support for the incumbent president.
