Abuja

Dr Olubunmi Tunji -Ojo, the Minister of Interior, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to inter-agency collaboration, innovation, and national development ahead of the African International Defence Exhibition (AFRIDEX) 2026.

He stated this on Tuesday in Abuja when he received Major General Umar Alkali and his delegation on a courtesy visit, according to a press release e-signed by the Ministry’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mrs. Mary Ali.

Describing AFRIDEX as “a very special programme,” Dr. Tunji-Ojo said meaningful progress within Nigeria’s defence and security architecture can only be achieved through collaboration rather than isolated efforts. He urged institutions to embrace openness and partnership to maximize impact and drive national growth.

The Minister commended the exhibition as a vital platform for both emerging and established innovators, especially Nigerian youths showing exceptional creativity in digital and cybersecurity. He noted that giving such talents visibility is key to national pride, economic advancement, and global competitiveness.

On innovation, Dr. Tunji-Ojo stressed that research remains the backbone of development and called for stronger linkages between innovation and market opportunities. He said creating platforms where innovators, manufacturers, and investors interact is critical to turning research into tangible economic value.

He encouraged the organisers to make AFRIDEX an annual event, noting that while the maiden edition may present challenges, it would provide valuable lessons for future editions. He also called for broader collaboration across all security and intelligence agencies, adding, “this is not a time for territorial thinking, but for collective progress.”

The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s support for the initiative, describing it as one that represents “the future, not just the present.” He said sustained efforts would attract international participation and grow indigenous industries. On logistics, he recommended a dedicated visa support desk to ensure seamless entry for the expected influx of international participants.

Earlier, Major General Alkali thanked the Minister for his support for capacity building and inter-agency cooperation. He formally introduced AFRIDEX as a global defence and security exhibition scheduled for October 26–29, 2026, at Eko Atlantic City, Lagos. Organized with Federal Government support and hosted by the Ministry of Defence in collaboration with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the event is expected to host over 30,000 international attendees and 500 exhibitors, showcasing solutions across land, air, maritime, space, and cyber domains. The visit ended with a mutual commitment to position Nigeria as a global hub for defence innovation and security solutions.
