Continued from Saturday’s analysis:

INEC’s timetable and the importance of electoral preparedness

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for January 16, 2027, while governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections are scheduled for February 6, 2027. The revised timetable provides an important framework for political parties, candidates, election administrators and voters to prepare for the polls.

However, publishing dates is only one aspect of electoral preparedness. INEC must also demonstrate effective logistical planning, reliable voter accreditation, transparent result management and the capacity to respond promptly to complaints.

Political parties, for their part, must comply with electoral requirements and ensure that their candidates and agents understand the rules. Public confidence will depend not merely on assurances of readiness but on the commission’s ability to administer the elections competently, impartially and transparently.

Candidate selection and internal party democracy

The credibility of the general elections will be influenced significantly by the processes through which political parties select their candidates. Where primaries are perceived as unfair, opaque or dominated by a narrow circle of influential individuals, disputes can weaken parties before the general election begins. Aspirants who feel excluded may challenge the process in court, withdraw their support or move to other political platforms. Such disputes can consume time and resources that should otherwise be devoted to policy development and voter engagement.

Political parties should therefore establish transparent nomination procedures, respect applicable electoral laws and provide credible mechanisms for resolving internal disagreements. Candidate selection should also encourage competent representation and meaningful participation by women, young people and other groups whose political inclusion remains important to democratic development.

Economic hardship and the voter’s verdict

Beyond political alliances and campaign strategies, economic conditions may exert substantial influence on voters’ decisions in 2027. Nigerians are likely to evaluate candidates according to their proposals for addressing the cost of living, food affordability, unemployment, electricity supply, public infrastructure and access to healthcare and education. The debate over economic reforms will be especially important. Supporters of the administration may argue that difficult policy changes are necessary to correct longstanding structural weaknesses, while opponents may contend that implementation has imposed excessive burdens on households and businesses.

Both positions must be assessed against measurable outcomes rather than political slogans. Candidates should explain how their proposed policies would be financed, how quickly benefits could emerge and what safeguards would protect vulnerable citizens. Ultimately, voters need credible plans, not merely promises of economic recovery.

Security, national cohesion and the responsibility of candidates

Insecurity remains a major concern that demands serious attention from every presidential and governorship candidate. Armed violence, terrorism, kidnapping and communal conflicts can undermine livelihoods, restrict economic activity and discourage citizens from participating in public life. Political parties must therefore present practical security strategies that address operational capacity, intelligence gathering, justice administration, community engagement and the underlying conditions that enable violence.

They should also avoid exploiting insecurity to inflame ethnic, religious or regional divisions. The language used during campaigns matters because inflammatory rhetoric can deepen distrust and expose communities to further tension. Candidates should be challenged to explain how their policies would protect citizens, strengthen security institutions and preserve constitutional rights. National security must be treated as a responsibility of governance rather than a convenient instrument of electoral propaganda.

Electoral credibility, technology and public confidence

The credibility of the 2027 elections will depend on more than the identities of the candidates or the strength of their political organisations. Voters must have confidence that registration, accreditation, voting, counting and result declaration will be conducted according to established rules.

Electoral technology may improve accuracy and efficiency, but its effectiveness depends on adequate testing, dependable infrastructure, trained personnel and transparent procedures. INEC should communicate clearly about the capabilities and limitations of its systems while providing credible channels for complaints and independent scrutiny.

Political parties and their supporters must also distinguish verified evidence from rumours, especially when allegations of manipulation circulate online. Any genuine irregularities should be investigated through lawful processes. A credible election requires both effective administration and a political culture that respects evidence, accountability and peaceful dispute resolution.

Beyond Winning: What the 2027 elections should mean for Nigeria

The ultimate measure of the 2027 general elections should not be which political party accumulates the most endorsements, attracts the largest rallies or recruits the greatest number of influential defectors. It should be whether Nigerians can make an informed choice among credible alternatives and whether the eventual winners demonstrate the capacity to govern in the public interest.

Tinubu’s re-election campaign must answer questions about his administration’s record, while opposition candidates must establish that they possess workable policies, national reach and the discipline required to govern a complex federation. INEC must protect the integrity of the electoral process, and the judiciary must resolve electoral disputes impartially and in accordance with the law. Citizens, too, must look beyond party loyalties and evaluate candidates on competence, character, policy and accountability. The election offers an opportunity to strengthen democratic institutions, but that opportunity will be lost if political competition becomes merely a contest for office without a corresponding commitment to public service.

Conclusion

Nigeria’s 2027 elections are shaping up as a contest between the advantages of incumbency, the opposition’s search for unity and the electorate’s demand for better governance. Tinubu may enter the race with the institutional and organisational advantages of the presidency, but the extent to which these advantages translate into votes will depend partly on how citizens assess his administration’s performance.

Opposition leaders, meanwhile, must demonstrate that their differences can be managed in the interest of a credible alternative. Above all, candidates and parties must recognise that political mobilisation cannot substitute for convincing policies and measurable commitments. A successful election should produce more than a winner; it should reinforce the principle that political authority derives from the people and must be exercised in their interest.

The responsibility for achieving that outcome rests jointly with INEC, political parties, candidates, security agencies, the media, civil society and the Nigerian electorate.
