In this piece, Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka Our Managing Editor writes that as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, the political landscape is increasingly defined by President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ambition, the opposition’s struggle to build a formidable alternative, shifting political alliances and growing public expectations for accountable leadership.

Although the contest has attracted considerable attention, the central question is whether political parties can move beyond calculations for electoral victory to offer credible solutions to Nigeria’s economic hardship, insecurity, unemployment and governance challenges. The evolving contest, as reflected in News Maker Media (NMM) Election Watch 2027, presents an opportunity to assess not only the strength of individual candidates but also the resilience of Nigeria’s democratic institutions.

Tinubu’s re-election ambition and the advantage of incumbency

President Bola Tinubu’s decision to seek another term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) places his administration’s record at the centre of the 2027 presidential contest. Incumbency offers advantages, including national visibility, established political structures and the opportunity to present government policies and achievements to voters.

However, these advantages do not automatically translate into electoral support. Tinubu must contend with public assessments of his economic reforms, the cost of living, employment opportunities and the government’s response to insecurity. While supporters may argue that difficult reforms require time to produce sustainable results, critics are likely to question the immediate sacrifices demanded of ordinary Nigerians. The election will therefore test whether voters consider the administration’s policies sufficiently benefkicial to justify another four years.

The Opposition’s Challenge: Unity or another missed opportunity?

The opposition faces a challenge that extends beyond identifying popular presidential candidates. Its greatest test is the ability to build a coherent political platform capable of attracting voters across Nigeria’s diverse regions, ethnic groups and socioeconomic backgrounds.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), associated with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures, represents one avenue through which political actors seeking an alternative to the APC have organised themselves. Nevertheless, the presence of prominent politicians within a coalition does not guarantee unity of purpose. Disagreements over leadership, presidential tickets, party structures and the distribution of political influence could undermine its effectiveness.

Unless opposition leaders establish a credible agreement on leadership and policy priorities, their combined political experience may fail to translate into a cohesive electoral force.

Peter Obi and the appeal of political change

Peter Obi remains an important figure in discussions about the 2027 presidential contest, particularly because of the support he attracted among young people and voters seeking an alternative to established political arrangements in 2023.

His political appeal is associated with demands for accountability, prudent public spending, improved governance and a different approach to leadership. However, sustaining public enthusiasm requires more than the popularity of a candidate or the mobilisation of supporters on social media.

Obi and his political allies must demonstrate the capacity to organise effectively across the country, build durable party structures and communicate a detailed programme for addressing national problems. His electoral prospects will also depend on the strength of his political platform, the alliances he can secure and the ability of his supporters to translate enthusiasm into votes.

Atiku Abubakar and the question of opposition leadership

Atiku Abubakar’s continued participation in presidential politics brings considerable political experience and an established national profile to the opposition camp. His challenge, however, is to demonstrate that experience can produce a compelling alternative to the incumbent administration.

Repeated presidential contests can strengthen a candidate’s familiarity with national politics, but they may also generate questions about generational change, political renewal and the emergence of new leadership. The opposition must determine whether its best strategy is to rally around an experienced candidate or build a broader coalition around a different figure capable of uniting competing interests.

That decision should be guided by transparent internal processes, electoral viability and policy commitments rather than personal ambition alone.

Opposition fragmentation and the risk of divided votes

One of the most consequential issues ahead of 2027 is whether opposition parties can coordinate their political activities sufficiently to challenge the ruling party. Where several candidates appeal to overlapping groups of voters, a divided opposition could strengthen the electoral position of the incumbent without necessarily demonstrating overwhelming public satisfaction with the government. Yet the answer is not simply to compel every opposition figure into one arrangement.

A coalition built without mutual trust, clear leadership arrangements and a shared policy programme may collapse under pressure. Political parties must therefore address the underlying causes of fragmentation, including disagreements over candidate selection, regional representation and control of party machinery. The quality of their negotiations may prove as important as the popularity of their eventual presidential candidates.

Political Defections: Strategy, conviction or electoral calculation?

The movement of politicians between parties is another defining feature of Nigeria’s pre-election politics. Defections can reflect genuine disagreements over policy, party leadership or political direction. They can also be motivated by calculations about access to political influence, electoral opportunities and the prospects of particular candidates.

Consequently, the number of governors, legislators or influential politicians aligned with a party should not be treated as a definitive measure of public support. Political officeholders may possess considerable organisational influence, but voters retain independent interests and judgments. The more important question is whether political realignments produce better representation, stronger institutions and more responsive governance. Where defections are driven principally by the pursuit of power, they risk reinforcing public perceptions that political loyalty is negotiable and party ideology secondary.
