A House of Representatives aspirant under the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for Aguata Federal Constituency of Anambra State, Dr. Okwudili Ezeike, has promised to push for legislation that rewards and protects Nigerian workers if he wins a seat in the National Assembly.
Ezeike made the pledge in Abuja on at the weekend while speaking with journalists to mark the 2026 International Workers’ Day. The attorney- health guru said workers remain central to national growth and must be treated with dignity.
He argued that Nigerian workers deserve proper wages, rewards, and recognition because they contribute enormously to economic development in every sector. “The prosperity of any country rests on the sweat and skill of its workforce,” he said.
Ezeike noted that poor remuneration, weak workplace protections, and inadequate welfare provisions continue to undermine productivity and morale across the country. He said the National Assembly must take the lead in reversing the trend through clear, enforceable laws.
“As an attorney and a health officer, I know the health and legal needs of the workers,” Ezeike told reporters. He added that his dual background gives him insight into occupational safety, healthcare access, and labour rights litigation.
The aspirant said his legislative priorities would include minimum wage reviews tied to cost of living, health insurance expansion for informal workers, and stronger penalties for employers who violate labour standards. He also promised to advocate for vocational training and retraining schemes.
Ezeike called on government at all levels to see workers as partners in development rather than mere cost centres. He urged the private sector to complement legislative efforts with fair employment practices and timely payment of salaries.
He wished Nigerian workers a peaceful celebration, stressing that “rewarding legislation” would be his focus if the people of Aguata give him their mandate to serve in the 10th National Assembly.
