Abuja

The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists has called for deeper collaboration between the media and security institutions to advance national peace, security, and inclusive governance. According to a press release signed by Wasilah Ladan, National Secretary of the organization on Thursday, the appeal was made during a courtesy visit to the FCT Police Command in Abuja ahead of the WINSEC Summit and Awards 2026 scheduled for 30 June 2026.

NAWOJ National Chairperson Hajia Aisha Ibrahim, represented by Comrade Bassey Ita-Ikpang, Chairperson of the Contact and Mobilization Sub-Committee of WINSEC and NAWOJ FCT Chairperson, thanked FCT Commissioner of Police CP Ahmed Mohammed for granting the association an audience despite his busy schedule. The delegation briefed him on the upcoming summit as the chief security officer of the territory.

The initiative, organized by NAWOJ National in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists, media houses, and Crime Reporters Global Nigeria, is designed to strengthen ties between the media and security sector. Ita-Ikpang said WINSEC, which stands for Women in Security Summit, will serve as a platform to bridge conversations, build partnerships, and promote greater inclusion of women in Nigeria’s security architecture.

She explained that the summit will bring together stakeholders from security agencies, the media, governance, civil society, and policy circles to discuss security, peacebuilding, gender inclusion, leadership, and national development. According to her, the event is intended as more than a one-off gathering, but a movement to amplify women’s role in security discourse and recognize individuals and institutions contributing to peace and stability.

Hajia Ibrahim commended the Nigeria Police Force for remaining one of the closest security institutions to the people. She praised the FCT Command under CP Mohammed for demonstrating professionalism, strategic coordination, and commitment in tackling security challenges in the capital.

She described the commissioner’s leadership style as impactful and inspiring, noting that his approach has helped build public trust and confidence among residents and stakeholders. NAWOJ urged the command to lend its support and institutional backing to ensure the success of the summit.

In his response, CP Ahmed Mohammed commended NAWOJ’s leadership for initiating the WINSEC Summit and Awards and said he was honored by the recognition. He assured the association of the FCT Police Command’s full support, including providing security to guarantee a hitch-free event for participants, guests, and NAWOJ members.

The commissioner also pledged continued collaboration with NAWOJ FCT as host of the summit and reaffirmed the command’s commitment to initiatives that promote peace, security, and national development. He said partnerships between the media and security agencies remain vital to effective policing and public engagement.

The courtesy visit ended on a cordial note, with both parties expressing commitment to sustaining a productive working relationship. NAWOJ said it would continue to engage security institutions to foster dialogue and inclusive participation in national security matters.

The WINSEC Summit and Awards 2026 is expected to draw participants from across the country. The association said further details on speakers, awardees, and participation will be announced in the lead-up to the event.
