Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yaradua, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army, has felicitates with the Nigerian Army on its 2026 Army Day, calling July 6 a landmark date that commemorates 163 years of service to the nation.

The Senator, in a statement issued on Monday, said the Nigerian Army has for more than a century and a half served as a pillar of stability, courage and sacrifice in protecting the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Reflecting on the 2026 theme, _“Protecting the Nation and Serving the People: A Way Forward for the Nigerian Army,”_ Yaradua said it captures both the Army’s constitutional role and its growing connection with the people it serves.

He explained that the theme goes beyond border defence to emphasize professionalism, accountability, innovation and service as core to modern military operations. “National security is not achieved by capability alone, but also by the confidence, trust and cooperation of the people,” he said.

Senator Yaradua singled out troops fighting in the North-West, North-East and other operational areas for commendation. He recognized their sacrifices in safeguarding communities and restoring hope, while paying tribute to fallen soldiers and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

The lawmaker pledged the Senate Committee’s continued support through legislative oversight, funding and reforms. He highlighted the ongoing review of the Armed Forces Act as a key step toward giving the military a legal and welfare framework suited to current realities.

According to him, the goal is to build a 21st-century Army that is modern, well-equipped and accountable, with structures that address emerging security threats while improving troop welfare.

Concluding, Senator Yaradua said he hopes the celebration will deepen public appreciation for the Army, foster patriotism and strengthen civil-military relations. He charged officers and soldiers to remain professional and people-focused, stressing that “the Senate and the people of Nigeria stand firmly with you.”
