The Executive Director (ED) of Weekenders Media Commercial Limited, publishers of Weekenders Magazine, Princess Joy Omagha Idam, has appealed to Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, to use his office to order the immediate and unconditional release of the remaining Amasiri indigenes still in detention following the recent crisis in the community.
Making the request over the weekend Princess Idam commended the Ebonyi State Government for the earlier release of some detainees, describing it as a commendable step toward restoring hope and public confidence. She, however, noted that true justice and reconciliation cannot be achieved while innocent citizens remain in custody.
She emphasized that every Nigerian is entitled to constitutional rights including liberty, fair hearing, and the presumption of innocence until proven guilty by a competent court. In line with this, she urged the Governor to demonstrate his well-known commitment to justice, fairness, and compassionate leadership by ensuring that no innocent son or daughter of Amasiri remains behind bars.
According to her, the continued detention has inflicted severe emotional, psychological, and economic hardship on families. Breadwinners have been separated from their homes, children lack proper care and schooling, and elderly parents are left in pain and uncertainty over the fate of their loved ones.
Princess Idam further stated that prolonged detention is counterproductive to ongoing peace-building efforts in Amasiri. She stressed that sustainable peace can only thrive where justice, equity, and respect for human rights are upheld.
She therefore called on all stakeholders, traditional rulers, political leaders, religious institutions, security agencies, youth groups, and other community leaders, to embrace dialogue, reconciliation, and lawful channels in resolving conflicts for the greater good of Ebonyi State.
Expressing confidence in Governor Nwifuru’s leadership, the Executive Director urged him to seize this moment to demonstrate statesmanship by facilitating the unconditional release of the remaining detainees. She described such a move as an act of justice, mercy, and reconciliation that would heal wounds, restore public trust, and promote lasting peace in Amasiri and across Ebonyi State.
Weekenders Magazine, reaffirmed its commitment to championing justice, accountability, peaceful coexistence, good governance, and the protection of fundamental human rights. The organization maintained that sustainable development can only flourish in an environment where the rule of law is respected and citizens’ rights are protected.
