Abia APC backs down on Kalu, Nkwonta, vows to rebuild party ahead of 2027

The Abia APC has backed down from its earlier plan to discipline Senator Orji Uzor Kalu and Hon. Chris Nkwonta over alleged anti-party remarks, choosing instead to focus on rebuilding the party ahead of 2027.

The resolution was adopted on Sunday at a stakeholders’ meeting in Umuahia, chaired by State Chairman Hon. Chijioke Chukwu. The gathering came after the SWC threatened sanctions for comments allegedly seen as support for Labour Party Governor Alex Otti.

At its August 10 meeting, the SWC accused the two lawmakers of violating party rules and gave them 14 days to apologise publicly or face a disciplinary committee.

With no public apology issued, the party leadership shifted gears. Chukwu acknowledged that recent primaries and congresses had left members aggrieved and that the leadership was ready to take responsibility.

“We must put past disagreements behind us and work together to strengthen the party,” Chukwu told the gathering. He also urged members to channel grievances through internal structures rather than the media.

The meeting revisited the issues involving Kalu and Nkwonta. The chairman said both lawmakers had reached out privately to explain their positions, which helped de-escalate tensions.

Stakeholders then adopted a motion moved by Rt. Hon. Uzor Azubuike and seconded by Hon. Emmanuel Ndubisi to bring the matter to an end. The resolution covers Kalu, Nkwonta and other members linked to post-congress disputes.

Chukwu, however, clarified that the truce does not grant immunity. “Legitimate reviews by appropriate party authorities will continue, and future breaches will attract appropriate sanctions,” he warned. The meeting ended with a birthday celebration for the chairman.
