Analysing Deputy Senate President Barau’s move to retain Kano North for the APC

Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka in this analysis writes that the inauguration of the Kano North Senatorial District Campaign Council by Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin, has opened another phase in the APC’s preparations for the 2027 general elections, with party unity and grassroots mobilisation emerging as central themes.

Barau’s directive that APC members should work for the party’s candidates “from top to bottom” signals an attempt to build a coordinated campaign structure across the 13 local government areas of Kano North.

But beyond the campaign slogan lies a more significant political challenge: managing the interests of party members who contested the APC primaries but failed to secure tickets.

Barau specifically appealed to such aspirants to accept the outcome and work with those who emerged as candidates. The appeal is important because primary elections can create competing interests within political parties, particularly where several aspirants have strong grassroots structures.

The campaign council is therefore being inaugurated with two related assignments, mobilising voters and maintaining internal cohesion.

Its chairman, Engineer Rabiu Sulaiman Bichi, and other members have been given the responsibility of coordinating the party’s campaign across the senatorial district. Reports indicate that the structure includes politicians and grassroots mobilisers drawn from different parts of Kano North.

The emphasis on an “all-inclusive” council is also significant. Barau said stakeholders at the ward, local government and senatorial district levels all have roles to play. This suggests that the campaign is intended to rely on existing party structures rather than operate solely through high-level political figures.

However, organisation alone does not automatically guarantee political cohesion. The real test will be whether those who lost the primaries genuinely participate in the campaign and whether competing interests can be managed within the APC structure.

Another important element is the party’s attempt to present the 2027 election as a collective contest rather than a series of individual races. The campaign council is expected to mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Barau himself and APC candidates for the House of Representatives and State House of Assembly.

This “top-to-bottom” approach could make campaign coordination easier, but it also places a significant burden on the grassroots structure to communicate a broad range of candidates and issues to voters.

The council’s effectiveness will therefore depend on how successfully it converts its formal structure into ward-level mobilisation, voter engagement and internal coordination.

The inauguration also demonstrates that the 2027 political contest is moving beyond early declarations and political positioning into organised campaign preparation. Across Kano North, the APC has now formally activated a structure tasked with taking its message to voters.

For Barau, the immediate political objective is clear: build a united campaign organisation capable of working across the senatorial district.

For the wider APC structure, however, the more fundamental question is whether the party can maintain the unity being demanded by its leadership after the competitive primary contests.

That makes reconciliation within the party almost as important as mobilisation outside it. The campaign council has been inaugurated; its next challenge is to demonstrate that its members can turn the call for unity into an operational grassroots campaign.

The eventual electoral outcome will be determined by voters. But before that stage, the APC’s performance in Kano North will provide a practical test of whether its campaign machinery can transform political organisation and internal reconciliation into sustained voter engagement.
