Amina Jane Mohammed, GCON, marks her 65th birthday on Saturday, June 27, 2026, with tributes pouring in for her decade-long influence on global affairs. From leading Nigeria’s defunct Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), now the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), to serving two terms as United Nations Deputy Secretary-General (UN-DSG), she remains one of Nigeria’s most visible voices on the world stage.
Before her UN appointment, Mohammed served as Nigeria’s Minister of Environment. Her performance at the global level later earned her reappointment by UN Secretary-General António Guterres after the expiration of her first term as UN-DSG, a recognition of her stewardship at the world body.
As a co-manager of political, economic, social and environmental challenges, Mohammed has engaged developed, developing and under-developed countries on humanitarian solutions. Her work has spanned conflict response, economic recovery and environmental action, positioning her as a central figure in multilateral diplomacy.
