Member representing AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Hon. Joshua Chinedu Obika has called for increased investment in local agriculture as a practical way to strengthen food security, create employment opportunities and improve the economic well-being of communities across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Obika stressed that supporting local farmers and unlocking the agricultural potential of the FCT would help build a more reliable food supply while creating sustainable livelihoods for residents, particularly young people.
He noted that food security begins with local production, urging stakeholders to look inward and prioritise the people whose agricultural activities sustain households and contribute to the nation’s food supply.
According to him, increased investment in farming would not only boost agricultural output but also open up employment opportunities for youths and strengthen the local economy.
He emphasised the need to support farmers and promote sustainable agricultural practices as part of broader efforts to improve food availability and economic development.
Obika maintained that harnessing the FCT’s agricultural potential would require a deliberate commitment to empowering farming communities and creating an environment in which local agricultural production could thrive.
He added that strengthening agriculture could provide a viable pathway to sustainable livelihoods while reducing dependence on food supplies from outside the territory.
The call highlights the importance of treating agriculture as more than food production, but also as a strategic sector for job creation, community empowerment and economic growth.
Obika’s position reinforces the need for greater attention to local farmers and agricultural development in building a more food-secure and economically resilient FCT.
