Former President of the Senate, and the Chairman Senate Committee on Defense, Senator Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan, has called for a full inquiry into a devastating military airstrike in Yobe State’s Geidam Local Government Area, which left over 100 civilians feared dead and dozens more injured.
The airstrike, targeting suspected Boko Haram insurgents, hit a local market in Jilli Futchimiram, sparking widespread outrage and concern. Lawan, in a press statement on Sunday, described the incident as “catastrophic” and urged the Federal Government to ensure justice for the victims.
According to eyewitnesses, multiple military jets took part in the operation, with medical sources confirming at least 35 severely injured victims. The casualty count is feared to rise as more bodies are recovered.
Lawan expressed condolences to the Yobe State Government and families of the victims, emphasizing the need to balance the fight against terror with protecting innocent lives. He urged the Federal Government to provide compensation to families of victims and ensure medical care for survivors.
The incident has raised concerns about civilian casualties in the ongoing insurgency fight, with Lawan stressing the need for a “full, transparent, and independent inquiry” to establish the facts.
The Senate Committee on Defence, chaired by Lawan, is expected to take up the matter, pushing for accountability and measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
