The National President of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria, ALGON, and Executive Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council, AMAC, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has called on the 12 ward legislators of the AMAC Legislative Council to urgently strengthen the council’s bylaws. The directive was contained in a press statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kingsley Madaki, and released over the weekend.
According to the statement, Maikalangu described legislative reform as critical to improving service delivery and governance at the grassroots level. He argued that outdated or weak bylaws limit the council’s capacity to enforce policies, generate revenue, and address community challenges effectively.
The ALGON President noted that a robust legal framework will give the legislative arm more teeth to hold the executive accountable while also creating an enabling environment for residents and businesses. He said the move aligns with his administration’s agenda to make AMAC more responsive and development-oriented.
Maikalangu urged the lawmakers to review existing laws, identify gaps, and propose new bylaws that reflect current realities in the area council. He stressed that legislation must address issues such as sanitation, street trading, land use, security, and internally generated revenue to improve living standards across the 12 wards.
The Executive Chairman also emphasized the importance of collaboration between the executive and legislature. He assured the councilors of his administration’s support to ensure that any law passed is implemented fully for the benefit of AMAC residents.
In his words, “For us to deliver the dividends of democracy, our laws must be strong, clear, and enforceable. I charge you to act swiftly and work in the interest of the people you represent.” He added that a proactive legislature is key to sustaining peace and development in the FCT’s largest area council.
The statement further stated that the training and sensitization of the lawmakers will be prioritized in the coming weeks to equip them with modern legislative practices. Maikalangu expressed confidence that the 12 ward legislators have the capacity to drive the reforms needed.
The call comes as AMAC intensifies efforts to deepen grassroots governance and improve revenue generation under Maikalangu’s leadership. Stakeholders are expected to monitor how the legislative council responds to the charge in the days ahead.
