The Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, has expressed deep regrets and apologised to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians over the Super Falcons’ failure to secure direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup at the ongoing 14th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

In a statement issued by the NFF Communications Department on Tuesday, NFF President, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau, said the apology was on behalf of the NFF Executive Committee, the Super Falcons and the entire Nigerian football family.

“We recognise the disappointment this result has caused millions of Nigerians who passionately support and identify with the Super Falcons,” Gusau said. He added that the team went into the tournament carrying the hopes of the nation and the support of the Federal Government.

The NFF specifically extended a heartfelt apology to President Tinubu, GCFR, noting his administration’s exceptional commitment to sports development, especially for women.

The federation recalled the unprecedented rewards given to the Super Falcons after their previous WAFCON triumph, including financial bonuses, national honours, houses and a presidential reception. It also noted continued support for the Super Eagles and other national teams.

“It is therefore with genuine humility and regret that we acknowledge that we have not been able to repay that confidence with the outcome expected,” the statement said. The NFF also apologised to the National Assembly, National Sports Commission, sponsors, stakeholders and supporters worldwide.

The NFF said a window of opportunity remains through the CAF play-off pathway. The Super Falcons will now fight for one of two CAF play-off tickets and subsequently pursue qualification through the FIFA inter-confederation play-offs. The federation promised an honest review of preparation, technical planning and logistics to better prepare the team.

“Our resolve is to ensure that the Super Falcons return stronger, fight harder and do everything possible to make Mr. President, the Federal Government and Nigerians proud once again,” Gusau stated, urging Nigerians to continue to support the team.
