Abuja

The Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, has charged Nigeria’s sports federations to elevate their standards as Team Nigeria enters the final phase of preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

At a strategic engagement with federation executives and technical officials in Abuja, Olopade said athlete welfare, discipline, and performance must drive every decision ahead of the Games. He described the meeting as a rallying point to align all federations with the Commission’s performance-driven roadmap.

In a major update, the DG confirmed that Team Nigeria will hold its overseas training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland. The location was selected for its world-class facilities, climate similarity to Glasgow, and minimal travel time to the Games Village.

Before the overseas phase, local camping will commence nationwide on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The early camp will focus on conditioning, medical screening, and technical refinement to address weaknesses identified from past outings.

“The welfare of our athletes is non-negotiable. They are the reason we are going to Glasgow, and everything we do must reflect that,” Olopade stated. He insisted that athlete-centered planning will guide logistics, medical support, and training schedules.

Olopade expressed optimism that Glasgow 2026 will mark Nigeria’s best Commonwealth Games performance yet. “We’ve studied past performances, identified gaps, and we are closing them early. Preparations have commenced in earnest and we expect every federation to match the Commission’s energy and urgency.”

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place from July 22 to August 2, 2026, bringing together over 70 nations and territories to compete across 20 sports. Nigeria has historically ranked among Africa’s strongest contingents at the Games.

The NSC said this edition will be built on deliberate planning, data-driven athlete support, and accountability at federation level. Olopade assured that the Commission will provide the required logistics and medical backing to give Team Nigeria a competitive edge.

“The days of excuses are over. Glasgow 2026 is about results. It’s about showing the world that Nigerian sports is back on the right trajectory – focused, purposeful, and athlete-centered,” he added.

With early camping schedules, upgraded logistics, and a clear mandate to surpass previous records, Team Nigeria is positioning itself not just to participate but to contend for medals across multiple disciplines. As the countdown begins, the National Sports Commission says it is laying the foundation for a new era of Nigerian sports built on early preparation, professional management, and unshakable belief in athletes.
