The Nigeria Union of Journalists Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council, has intensified efforts to advance youth development and education in Nigeria’s centre of unity through targeted initiatives aimed at empowering young Nigerians on Thursday, as part of its 2026 Press Week. The council under the leadership of Grace Ike organized quiz and academic competitions involving selected secondary schools across the FCT to promote academic excellence and intellectual growth.
The programme drew participation from students, teachers, and education stakeholders, and was designed to encourage healthy academic engagement while stimulating interest in learning. Organizers said it also created a platform for talent discovery and personal development, giving students practical exposure beyond the classroom.
Observers described the initiative as a timely intervention that has motivated students to take their studies more seriously. They noted improvements in confidence, discipline, teamwork, and critical thinking among participants, adding that the competition reinforced a culture of learning in the participating schools.
Stakeholders said the competitions came at a critical time when many young people need guidance, motivation, and positive engagement. They credited Ike with demonstrating visionary leadership by investing in programmes that directly shape the future of Nigerian youths, stressing that her support for education reflects an understanding of its role in building responsible citizens and a stronger society.
The effort has also been commended for highlighting how the media profession can contribute to nation building beyond information dissemination. Parents, students, and education stakeholders in the FCT expressed appreciation for the programme and praised Ike’s commitment to youth empowerment and educational development.
They described her work as an example of purposeful leadership and expressed hope for continued impact. Many said the initiative sets a standard for how professional bodies can partner with schools to strengthen learning outcomes and create opportunities for the next generation.
