The President General (PG) of Ogbunka Development Union, Orumba South LGA, Chief Jude Ikechukwu Chukwubueze, has said the community will comply with the Anambra State Government’s directive suspending Town Union elections.
Speaking in a telephone press interview, Chief Chukwubueze said while his preference is for elections to be held as scheduled and power handed over accordingly, the community has no option than to obey the government in the interest of peace and orderliness.
“As a leader, I serve under my local government, state and Nigeria in general. So anything that will promote peace, unity and democracy, I shall not hesitate to do,” he said.
He disclosed that Ogbunka’s Town Union election was scheduled for December 26, with handover by Easter, in line with the tenure of the current executive, but noted that the process had not been concluded before the suspension directive.
He explained that the conduct of Town Union elections involves notifying the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, payment of statutory fees and constitution of an electoral committee in collaboration with the Ministry.
“Based on this directive, everything is suspended for now. We are waiting for further directive. We cannot go against the directive of the government,” he stated.
Chief Chukwubueze added that the directive affects all communities in the state and covers elections for President General, Youth Leader and Women Leader.
He urged communities to remain peaceful and await further directives from the government.
