House of Representatives aspirant for Aguata Federal Constituency in Anambra State, Dr. Okwudili Ezeike, has promised to sponsor favourable legislation for Nigerian workers if elected to the National Assembly.Ezeike made the pledge on Thursday in Abuja while speaking with journalists to commemorate the 2026 International Workers’ Day. He said the contributions of workers to national growth demand stronger legal protection and better welfare packages. The attorney-at-law maintained that workers deserve proper wages, rewards, and recognition because they contribute enormously to economic development in every country, including Nigeria. He described labour as the backbone of both public and private sector productivity.Ezeike, who is also a health officer, said his professional background gives him a clear view of the challenges facing workers. “As an attorney and a health officer, I know the health and legal needs of the workers,” he told reporters. He argued that current laws do not adequately address workplace safety, fair remuneration, and post-retirement welfare. If elected, he said, he would push for “rewarding legislation” that ties minimum wage to inflation, expands health insurance coverage, and strengthens enforcement of labour standards. The aspirant noted that many workers operate under harsh conditions with limited access to legal redress or quality healthcare. He pledged to champion bills that guarantee occupational health safeguards, timely payment of salaries, and incentives for productivity in both formal and informal sectors.Ezeike urged government and employers to treat workers as strategic partners in nation-building rather than expendable tools. He said sustained economic growth is impossible without a motivated, healthy, and properly compensated workforce. He congratulated his constituency and Nigerian workers on the 2026 May Day celebration and called for unity between labour and policymakers. Ezeike added that his mandate, if given by the people of Aguata, would be anchored on laws that dignify labour and secure workers’ future.
