Is Senator Hanga’s resignation from the NDC politics of survival or betrayal of mandate?

In this analysis, Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka, Our Managing Editor, takes a look at the resignation of Senator Rufai Hanga from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), barely three years into his tenure, and this has once again thrown a spotlight on Nigeria’s culture of political defection. As the NDC’s only northern senator and Deputy Minority Whip, his exit is not just a personal political decision. It raises deeper questions about party loyalty, ideology, representation, and the health of opposition politics in the country.

On August 3, 2026, Senator Hanga formally notified the NDC Chairman of Najeria Ward in Nassarawa LGA, Kano, of his resignation with immediate effect. The letter cited “careful reflection and personal deliberation” as the reason, but offered no policy or ideological justification.

The timing is significant. Coming ahead of the 2027 election cycle, Hanga’s defection fits into a familiar Nigerian pattern where lawmakers migrate to the ruling party once it becomes politically expedient. This raises the question: was the move driven by conviction or convenience?

As the NDC’s sole senator from the 19 northern states, Hanga carried a symbolic weight. His departure leaves the party virtually non-existent in the Senate’s northern bloc, further eroding whatever national spread the NDC hoped to build after 2023.

Critically, Hanga was elected on the platform of the New Nigerian Peoples (NNPP), and later joined the NDC. He left the NNPP for the NDC on May 6, 2026. He made the move due to unresolved internal disputes, factional disagreements, and conflicting leadership directions within the NNPP that hindered his legislative duties. His defection seems to present a moral dilemma of mandate betrayal versus personal political freedom.

From a legal standpoint, Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution, as amended, allows defection without losing seat only under specific conditions such as party division. Hanga’s resignation letter did not cite any such division within the NDC, which may open him to legal challenges from his former party.

Although it is not yet clear, if he has joined the ruling All Progressives Congress Politically (APC), as carried in some news media, but if it is true, the APC stands to gain the most. If true, with Hanga’s defection, all three Kano senatorial seats are now under APC control. This consolidates the ruling party’s grip on Kano’s political structure and gives it more leverage in negotiating federal projects for the state.

For the NDC, the damage is two-fold. First, it loses parliamentary experience and visibility in the Senate through Hanga’s role as Deputy Minority Whip. Second, it suffers a reputational hit, unable to retain even its most prominent elected official in a strategic region.

The move also reflects the weak institutionalization of opposition parties in Nigeria. Without clear ideology, internal democracy, or financial muscle, smaller parties like the NDC struggle to retain talent when the ruling party dangles access, patronage, and “federal presence.”

Voters in Kano Central may feel shortchanged. Many supported Hanga as an opposition voice to provide checks and balance. His move to the APC effectively silences that opposition voice and aligns the entire Kano delegation with the government at the center.

Defenders of Hanga will argue that joining the ruling party is pragmatic. A senator in the majority party has better access to committee chairmanships, constituency projects, and direct channels to the presidency. In Nigeria’s political economy, opposition often means marginalization.

However, this “pragmatism” argument weakens democracy. If every elected opposition member crosses over after election, Nigeria will slide toward a de-facto one-party state where dissent and alternative policy ideas are absent from legislative debates.

The resignation also exposes the NDC’s failure in post-election party building. Three years after the 2023 elections, the party could not provide Hanga with a compelling reason to stay, no clear roadmap, no strong caucus, and no tangible incentives for opposition lawmakers to remain.

For Kano politics, Hanga’s defection may trigger a domino effect. Local government chairmen, House of Assembly members, and political appointees loyal to him are likely to follow, further weakening opposition structures in the state.

Ultimately, this episode underscores a recurring crisis in Nigerian democracy: the prioritization of personal ambition over party ideology. Until parties are built on principles rather than platforms for individual ascent, defections like Hanga’s will remain the norm, not the exception.

As Kano and Nigeria watch the formal reception of Senator Hanga into the APC, the real test will be whether his defection translates to real dividends for Kano Central, or whether it becomes another case of political recycling that leaves constituents with less representation than they started with.
