The National Financial Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Akibu Dalhatu has charged Nigerian journalists to uphold truth, integrity and professional responsibility in the discharge of their duties.
Dalhatu gave the charge on Thursday in Abuja at the unveiling and launch of Eagle Times Newspaper, held as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
He urged journalists and media organisations to resist pressures that could compromise their professional responsibilities, stressing that the media must remain committed to reporting issues as they are.
According to him, journalists have a responsibility to provide Nigerians with accurate and balanced information rather than concentrating on sensational stories, particularly reports of accidents, deaths, banditry and other negative incidents.
He said: “We have to say it as it is. Journalists should tell Nigerians what is good for them and what they need to know.”
Dalhatu, who recalled his experience as a former Commissioner for Information, said he had encountered situations where journalists received sensitive information but failed to present it accurately or in a balanced manner.
He therefore challenged Eagle Times and its reporters to establish a reputation for truth, balance and responsible journalism.
He also urged journalists working with the newspaper not to allow personal interests, financial inducements or relationships with politicians and government officials to influence their reports.
“Don’t tell anybody lies. Let this newspaper be an example to others. We should not fear anything,” he said.
Dalhatu further encouraged journalists to maintain professional independence, noting that a reporter who remains financially and personally independent is better positioned to speak truth to power.
He illustrated his point with a personal experience, saying he had maintained friendships with wealthy individuals without approaching them for assistance with personal financial problems.
According to him, such independence enables him to advise people honestly whenever necessary.
The ADC National Financial Secretary said the media had historically played important roles in Nigeria’s democratic development and should not abandon that responsibility.
He expressed optimism that the newly launched newspaper would contribute positively to national discourse by providing balanced and credible information to the public.
Dalhatu, however, clarified that he attended the occasion in his personal capacity as a friend and invitee and was not representing the ADC.
He said he would nevertheless convey the message of the newspaper’s management to his party and principal, assuring that he would support the organisation within his capacity.
