In this feature, Our Senior Correspondent Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka profiles Dr. Okwudili Ezeike, a US-based attorney and public health expert seeking to bring transparency, competence, and community-driven leadership to Aguata Federal Constituency in Nigeria’s House of Representatives. Through his record of grassroots service and policy vision, he is making the case for a new kind of representation rooted in trust and measurable impact. Excerpts.

Dr. Okwudili Ezeike, House of Representatives aspirant for Aguata Federal Constituency of Anambra State, under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says his bid for office is rooted in a simple conviction: politics must be held in trust for the people, not wielded for personal gain.

The US-based attorney and public health expert is seeking to represent the 14 towns that make up Aguata, promising representation that translates government programs into tangible benefits for constituents. For him, effective legislation should respond directly to the daily realities of the people he hopes to serve.

If elected, Ezeike has outlined three immediate legislative priorities: healthcare, security, and erosion control. He describes the trio as interconnected issues that define the quality of life in Aguata, particularly the erosion crisis that continues to devastate communities across the constituency.

On name recognition, Ezeike believes he enters the race with a strong foundation. The Ezeike surname is well known in Aguata, largely due to the legacy of his late father, Michael Ezeike, a Grade 1 Headmaster who taught across multiple towns, and his mother, Lady Cecilia Ezeike, a retired teacher and former leader in the Catholic Women Organization in both Awka and Ekwulobia Dioceses.

His own grassroots journey began early. From his secondary school days, Ezeike served as the youngest Secretary General of the Ekwulobia Students Union, and later as Hall Chairman of ‘D Block’ Ziks Flat Halls at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Those experiences, he says, shaped his commitment to community service.

That commitment has continued through his Ikeakachi Foundation, which has supported indigent students with scholarships, covered WAEC registration fees, and organized healthcare outreach programs across several towns in the constituency. The foundation has become a quiet but consistent presence in local development efforts.

Until he relocated abroad, Ezeike lived primarily in his hometown of Ekwulobia, building relationships across Aguata’s communities. He says those longstanding ties give him a clear understanding of the constituency’s needs and challenges.

Addressing the widespread voter mistrust toward politicians, Ezeike argues that the breakdown occurs when elected officials fail in their fiduciary duty to the public. He believes restoring confidence requires transparency, accountability, and integrity in public office.

His own track record, he notes, includes four years of credible service as President of the Ekwulobia Community USA-Canada, where he managed public trust responsibilities for the diaspora community. That experience, he says, reinforced his belief in service anchored on honesty and results.

Ezeike explains his choice of the NDC as deliberate and ideological. He identifies as “Obidient” and has followed Peter Obi from the Labour Party to the ADC and now to the NDC, describing Obi as Nigeria’s best opportunity for national renewal.

He adds that Obi’s transformative agenda requires men and women of integrity to help dismantle what he calls the current criminal enterprise in politics. Ezeike insists that leaving politics to shady actors guarantees more of the same dysfunction Nigerians have endured.

The erosion menace, he says, is the issue that keeps him awake at night. Entire towns in Aguata are being ravaged by gully erosion, displacing families and destroying farmland, yet responses have been slow and fragmented.

In his first 100 days, Ezeike plans to convene a stakeholders’ forum bringing together colleagues, international NGOs, and the United Nations to spotlight the crisis and mobilize coordinated action. His goal is to work with any willing partner to contain the growing environmental threat.

He pledges that his representation will be measured not by rhetoric but by visible impact. Constituents, he says, should judge him by his proven record of good works and his willingness to remain accessible and accountable.

For Ezeike, the campaign is about more than winning a seat. It is about restoring faith in public service, rebuilding trust, and ensuring that Aguata’s voice is heard and respected in the National Assembly.

Should Ezeike’s pledges translate into action, Aguata could finally see representation that bridges diaspora expertise with grassroots realities. For constituents weary of broken promises, it offers a real chance to turn long-held yearnings on healthcare, security, and erosion control into tangible progress.
