Panic gripped traders and buyers at the popular Karmo Tuesday Market in Abuja on Tuesday morning after a bus loaded with goods was gutted by fire.
The vehicle, which was delivering goods into the market, was said to have caught fire shortly after arriving. Eyewitnesses reported that people pushing the bus made frantic efforts to save it and the goods inside, but all efforts proved abortive.
Officers and men from the divisional police station in Karmo, along with traders and passers-by, rushed to the scene to prevent the fire from spreading to nearby stalls and shops.
It took a combined effort to contain the blaze before it could escalate and cause wider damage to the market, one of the busiest in the FCT.
No life was lost in the incident, but goods worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed in the fire.
The cause of the fire outbreak could not be confirmed as of press time. Most traders were said to be busy moving their wares to safety.
Karmo Market and its traders have suffered repeated fire incidents over the years, raising concerns about safety and emergency response in the area.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
