NDC’s portal win tests INEC’s neutrality and party stability

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says it has filed an appeal, secured a stay, and regained Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) portal access to upload Dickson and Obi. The party’s statement mixes legal confidence with political reassurance, but it also exposes fault lines around primaries, timelines, and institutional trust, Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka Our Consulting Editor writes in Abuja.

Legal Maneuver First: The NDC confirms it has filed an appeal and a stay/injunction against the Lokoja ruling, with a covering letter to INEC’s chairman. This frames INEC’s portal reopening as a legal compliance issue, not political favor.

Status Claim, Unsettled: The party insists it “has come to stay” as a duly registered entity that has “participated in all political processes so far.” That assertion directly contests the uncertainty created by the recent court judgment.

Primaries Under INEC Watch: Dickson says nominations are concluded and candidates have “emerged… in primaries observed, monitored and recorded by INEC.” If true, it strengthens the NDC’s procedural argument. If contested, it becomes the judiciary’s next battleground.

4. *Administration, Not Nomination:* The party reduces the task to an administrative upload. Portal access has been granted, and names are being submitted. That narrows the dispute to process rather than eligibility, for now.

5. *Uploads in Progress:* Dickson and the Presidential Candidate are already on the portal; the Vice Presidential Candidate follows after deposition. Other candidates are being uploaded. The sequencing suggests careful legal sequencing rather than a rushed rollout.

Time Pressure Managed: Citing INEC’s timetable, the NDC says National Assembly uploads run to 11th next month, governors and State Assembly to 17th July. The message: “no reason to panic.” That is as much internal management as external communication.

Primary Fallout Acknowledged: The National Leader admits “only one person can emerge” and that processes “were not perfect.” For a new party running direct primaries at scale, friction was inevitable. The admission is politically honest but legally risky if opponents seize on it.

Reconciliation as Damage Control: Efforts to reach aggrieved aspirants are underway. Promises of inclusion in campaigns, committees, and structures aim to keep the grassroots intact. Whether that holds depends on how much patronage the NDC can actually deploy.

Democracy Rhetoric Rises: The statement warns against “desperados and mercenaries” and says “multi-party democracy must not die.” That elevates the NDC’s fight from party survival to a systemic stake, courting public sympathy.

Thanking INEC, With Caveats: Prof. Joash Amupitan is praised for “professionalism” and for registering the NDC plus two other parties per court order. The party also notes his opposition affidavit and reversal on ADC’s David Mark. The subtext: INEC must remain consistent and neutral.

Institutional Neutrality Test: Dickson calls on leaders to preserve the neutrality of INEC, the judiciary, and security agencies. That is a direct appeal to institutional referees to avoid partisan optics while the case is live.

Judiciary’s Move Next: With appeal and applications served, “the ball is now in the court of the judiciary.” The NDC is betting that courts will prioritize law over disruption. The timeline between now and 17th July makes that bet urgent.

Grassroots as Leverage: The party frames aspirants as its “backbone” and promises them roles. That is a mobilization strategy: convert disappointed aspirants into campaign foot soldiers before opponents recruit them.

Critical Gap: The statement is strong on process and timeline, but light on the substance of the Lokoja judgment. Without addressing the court’s reasoning head-on, the NDC risks a legal win on procedure being overturned on principle.

Bottom Line: The NDC has bought time, restored portal access, and projected calm. Yet its durability will be decided less by uploads and more by three factors: the judiciary’s ruling, INEC’s consistency, and whether reconciliation actually binds a fractious, first-cycle party. “Long live the NDC” is a slogan. The next 15 days will test if it is a strategy.
