The National Assembly, NASS, has debunked reports that all Constitution Alteration Bills have been sent to the 36 State Houses of Assembly, saying only one has been transmitted.
The Assembly said recent reports and public perception on the transmission have created confusion and needed to be corrected.
In a statement on Monday, September 22, 2026, signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, Esq., the legislature said the only Bill transmitted is the State Police Bill.
That Bill is the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bill, 2026, seeking to provide for the establishment of State Police Services and related matters, which was earlier announced on September 16.
“For the avoidance of doubt, it is only this particular Constitution Alteration Bill that has so far been transmitted,” Ogunlana stated, describing contrary reports as incorrect and misleading.
He said the NASS prioritized the State Police Bill because of mounting public pressure for security reforms and the need to create a constitutional framework to address policing challenges nationwide.
On the fate of the other Sixth Alteration Bills, he clarified that they will only be sent to the states after both the Senate and the House of Representatives pass them in identical versions as required by law.
The National Assembly urged Nigerians and the media to disregard rumours and rely solely on official NASS communications for authentic updates on the constitution review exercise.
