The Executive Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), and Chairman of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of ALGON, Hon. Christopher Zakka Maikalangu, has restated his administration’s commitment to public health, environmental protection, and better living standards for residents.
According to a statement signed by Kingsley Madaki, Chief Press Secretary, Office of the Executive Chairman, AMAC & Chairman, FCT ALGON, Maikalangu spoke as Co-Host of “Project Breath Clean Air Abuja.” The initiative targets indoor air pollution caused by firewood, kerosene, and charcoal.
The project is designed to promote cleaner cooking alternatives, ease pressure on forest resources, and improve health outcomes, with a focus on vulnerable households across the Federal Capital Territory.
Organized by the Mandate Secretary, Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), the programme drew government officials, development partners, traditional rulers, and community representatives to support the shift to safer household energy.
A major highlight was the distribution of 3kg LPG gas cylinders, burners, and refill vouchers to beneficiaries from twelve communities in the FCT. Organizers said the intervention will reduce exposure to harmful indoor smoke and expand access to clean, sustainable energy.
The clean cooking kits were presented on behalf of the AMAC Chairman by his Vice Chairman, Hon. Yusuf Muhammad Nadabo, who represented him at the event. Nadabo reiterated the Council’s support for programmes that advance residents’ welfare and environmental conservation.
Commending the Health Services and Environmental Secretariat, Maikalangu urged beneficiaries to use the items responsibly. He said the initiative will foster healthier families and align with the FCT’s wider sustainability objectives.
The AMAC Chairman further assured residents that the Council will sustain collaboration with stakeholders to deliver people-centred programmes that improve public health, protect the environment, and enhance quality of life across FCT communities.
