Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday paid a condolence visit to the family of late PDP former National Chairman, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, hours after returning from Italy.
Akpabio, who led his wife, Mrs. Unoma Akpabio, and aides to the family house, described Tukur, who died at 90 on September 12, as a rare detribalised Nigerian.
In a statement by his media aide, Jackson Udom, Akpabio said Tukur was “a great patriot and towering national figure whose contributions to the country transcended ethnic and political boundaries.”
Going down memory lane, the Senate President recalled that in 2009, the late elder statesman chaired an event he attended in London, a relationship he cherished.
He said: “The late Tukur left behind a legacy of love, wisdom and service to the nation and would continue to serve as an example to younger politicians.”
Akpabio lamented that Nigeria will miss Tukur’s wealth of experience and wisdom, but assured that the National Assembly will honour him on the Senate floor when plenary resumes.
He also charged the children to sustain their father’s legacy of unity, service and patriotism.
Responding on behalf of the family, Mahmoud Tukur thanked Akpabio and his entourage, and expressed deep appreciation to President Bola Tinubu and Nigerians for honouring their late father.
