Abuja

The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) has expressed deep sadness and grave concern over the death of Elder Omotayo Ezekiel Fajana, a prominent leader of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church. The elder’s body was found in a hotel room in Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, under circumstances the Authority described as tragic and suspicious.

In a statement issued in Abuja, NTDA Director-General Mr. Ola Awakan extended condolences to the family of the deceased, the C&S Church, and the Akungba-Akoko community. He said the incident raises serious questions about safety and security standards in Nigeria’s hospitality establishments.

Mr. Awakan pointed out that details surrounding the elder’s death, including the reported handling of his remains without proper medical certification and allegations of suspicious activity, demand immediate clarity. He described such events as damaging to public confidence in the hospitality sector.

While commending the Ondo State Police Command for arresting three suspects, the DG urged law enforcement to conduct a thorough, transparent and professional investigation. He stressed the need to uncover the full circumstances of the death, account for the unauthorized movement of the body, and expose any lapses or complicity.

Mr. Awakan emphasized that swift justice is critical to reassure the public and deter negligence or foul play within the industry. He reaffirmed that guest safety remains the NTDA’s top priority and disclosed that the Authority is working closely with security agencies to protect visitors and tourists.

Looking ahead, the NTDA said it will reactivate nationwide monitoring exercises with state governments to strictly enforce safety standards across all hotels and hospitality facilities. Mr. Awakan reiterated the Authority’s commitment to collaborate with hotel operators, law enforcement and community leaders to ensure a secure and responsible tourism environment.
