Former Imo State Governor, Achike Udenwa, has called for an end to what he described as divisive rhetoric by some government officials in Anambra and Ebonyi States, urging political actors to support their preferred candidates without attacking or insulting others.
Udenwa, who declared his support for former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election, said the silence of some political leaders should not be interpreted as a lack of support for Obi.
“Enough is enough. The fact that we have chosen to remain silent does not mean we are not behind him,” Udenwa said.
He expressed concern over statements allegedly emanating from some government officials in Anambra and Ebonyi, saying such comments could deepen divisions among the Igbo.
“We are not happy with what we are hearing from some government officials, both in Anambra and Ebonyi, and it must stop,” he said.
According to him, political differences should not become a basis for personal attacks or attempts to divide the Igbo people.
“You are free to support your preferred candidate without insulting others. We are not going to allow anyone to divide Ndigbo for selfish interests,” the former governor stated.
Udenwa also recalled his involvement in consultations undertaken by Obi and other South-East leaders, saying they travelled across Nigeria and engaged prominent Nigerians in the six geopolitical zones.
“Many people do not know that I, alongside other notable people from Alaigbo, accompanied Mr. Peter Obi on a tour across Nigeria, where we met notable people across the six geopolitical zones,” he said.
He further disclosed that he had no intention of seeking elective office again, despite his assertion that he remained qualified to contest.
“I don’t want to contest for any election again. I am 100 per cent qualified, but because we want a better Nigeria, that is why we want Mr. Peter Obi to become President of Nigeria. Some of us have decided to come forward and make our voices heard,” Udenwa said.
Udenwa’s comments come amid political realignments and consultations ahead of the 2027 general elections. He has recently been involved in political engagements around Obi and the opposition coalition. Reports in April 2026 identified him among South-East leaders accompanying Obi during consultations with former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The former governor’s intervention underscores the growing debate among South-East political leaders over the direction of the region’s politics ahead of 2027, with different political interests rallying support for competing candidates and platforms.
