As the Nigeria Barristers Association (NBA) counts down to its 2026 elections, concerns about process and unity have dominated discussions. In this interview, with Ekuson Nw’Ogbunka, Our Managing Editor, Barr. Alex Edim, Chairman of NBA Nyanya/Karu Branch, in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), explains why they have passed a vote of confidence on President Afam Osuigwe, why they trust Electoral Committee of the NBA (ECNBA), and why the election must hold. Excerpts.
Sir, there have been reports of crisis in the NBA ahead of the election, what is the position of the progressive chairmen?
We, the progressive chairmen, who form about 90 to 95% of NBA chairmen in Nigeria, have passed a vote of confidence on the President, Mazi Afam Josiah Osuigwe (SAN). We are satisfied with his proactive and pragmatic leadership.
What informed this vote of confidence?
His leadership style. He has been engaging, responsive, and focused on advancing the Bar. That is what we are seeing on the ground.
What about the Electoral Committee, ECNBA 2026?
We have confidence in ECNBA. They published the list of eligible voters to all branches for scrutiny. That is transparency.
Any complaints from members about the voters’ list?
None in my branch. I have 342 eligible members who paid before March 31 as required. I posted the list on our platform. Not one person said his name was omitted.
Is it the same across other branches?
Yes. On our chairmen’s platform, no chairman has complained that his members were disenfranchised.
Where then is this talk of crisis coming from?
I believe it is the handwork of outsiders and some hired mischief makers whose interest is to disrupt the peaceful process.
What is the stance of chairmen regarding the three presidential candidates?
We are neutral. All three candidates are eminently qualified. We have not identified with any particular one.
What happens after the election?
Whoever emerges tomorrow as president, all of us will support him. The president is the president of the Bar, not of any group.
There are calls to suspend the election. What is your reaction?
Lawyers are waiting to exercise their franchise. Saying the election should not hold is a form of disenfranchisement. The election should go on.
What is your message to NBA members?
Prepare, get ready, and vote for your choice on July 18. Exercise your right.
How do you assess ECNBA’s work so far?
They have done a good job that deserves commendation, not condemnation. I join all progressive chairmen to pass a vote of confidence on ECNBA 2026.
Are you worried about interference?
We won’t allow people from outside to distract us. ECNBA should not lose focus. They should go ahead and organize a credible election.
What role should chairmen play in this period?
To ensure our members are informed, to maintain neutrality, and to support the process.
Any word for President Osuigwe?
We appreciate his laudable programs and activities tailored towards the advancement of the Bar. We will continue to support him.
Final thoughts?
The Bar is one. Let us respect the profession, protect the process, and ensure that on July 18, every eligible lawyer votes. Thank you and God bless the NBA.
