A windstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall has caused significant damage to parts of the Kugbo Bus Terminal in Nyanya, Abuja, disrupting traffic and causing concern among residents and commuters. The storm, according to Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant, Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister on Tuesday, also affected sections of the Nyanya pedestrian bridge and nearby buildings, with debris scattered across the roadway.
According to preliminary reports, no lives were lost and no vehicles were damaged in the incident, which occurred a few hours ago. The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has directed the immediate deployment of security personnel to the scene to maintain law and order and ensure the free flow of traffic.
The Kugbo Bus Terminal, a key transport hub in Abuja, is part of a broader initiative to modernize urban transit and reduce congestion in the capital. The terminal, which has not yet begun full commercial operations, was constructed at a cost of N51 billion, sparking controversy over its structural integrity.
The incident has raised questions about the quality of construction and the management of public funds. The FCT Minister has assured residents that urgent steps will be taken to repair the damaged infrastructure and restore normalcy to the area.
