Dr. Chiogo Constance Ikokwu, a journalist cum politician, has thrown her hat into the ring for the Idemili North/ South Federal Constituency, Anambra State in 2027. In an interview, Ikokwu outlined her vision for the constituency, emphasizing her commitment to serving the people and promoting public good.
Ikokwu, who has a background in journalism, believes her experience in the media industry has equipped her with the skills to listen, communicate, and hold systems accountable. She is running on a platform of “Politics for Public good” and “Take Back Your Government”, emphasizing the need for citizens to take ownership of their government.
When asked about her top priorities, Ikokwu identified infrastructure, education/skills and human capital, and health access as key areas of focus. She plans to secure federal backing for critical roads and erosion control, upgrade schools, and expand vocational and digital skills training to link education to jobs.
Ikokwu said she will build strong alliances across party lines in the National Assembly and engage relevant ministries to ensure the needs of Idemili North and South are met. She also plans to use her journalistic background to spotlight the needs of the constituency and ensure their concerns remain visible and prioritized at the national level.
On security, Ikokwu said she will focus on legislation, oversight, budgeting, and coordination to address the challenges facing the constituency, adding that she will also ask questions about security spending, deployment, and outcomes at committee levels to ensure funds allocated to Anambra translate into measurable results.
Ikokwu believes holding the executive to account is key in a democracy and plans to do so through oversight and investigations, budget control, and relevant motions and resolutions on public matters. She is committed to advocating for policies that stimulate local industries, improve financial inclusion, and ensure government resources are transparently and efficiently used to benefit ordinary Nigerians.
Ikokwu therefore plans to engage her constituency through town hall meetings, digital platforms, and social media channels, and will establish advisory councils composed of young people, women, and vulnerable groups to ensure their perspectives inform her legislative priorities.
