The Principal Partner at Friends Chambers, Prince Orji Nwafor-Orizu has urged Governor Chukwuma Soludo to take a cue from opposition governors who accepted appointments or responsibilities associated with President Bola Tinubu’s political activities without resorting to attacks against their predecessors.
The appeal comes amid the controversy surrounding Soludo’s criticism of former Anambra State governor and the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), presidential candidate and the current, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Nwafor-Orizu’s position is that political differences should not prevent leaders from demonstrating restraint, maturity and respect for those who previously occupied public office.
He pointed to governors, including Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, as examples in the debate over how opposition figures have engaged with the Tinubu administration and its political activities.
According to the argument, accepting a political appointment or cooperating with a governing administration does not necessarily require a leader to discredit a predecessor or turn political disagreements into personal confrontations.
Nwafor-Orizu’s appeal places emphasis on the need for consistency in political conduct, particularly among leaders who operate within Nigeria’s competitive multiparty system.
The argument further suggests that governors should concentrate on governance, development and the welfare of their constituents rather than allowing political disagreements to overshadow their responsibilities.
The controversy has also raised questions about how political leaders can maintain their individual positions while preserving mutual respect and constructive engagement.
Nwafor-Orizu’s message to Soludo is that political leadership requires restraint and that differences over public policy or political direction should be addressed through reasoned debate and verifiable facts.
